Perfect Blue
It wasn't until recently that I had even heard of this movie's existence. I was around the time that Smile 2 and Trap had both come out, and many people were drawing comparisons to those with this. But even before then, Black Swan, which is a movie I adore, was the big movie that drew numerous comparisons. Despite seeing Black Swan at its release, I don't remember ever hearing about this film. Maybe I just wasn't as tuned in at the time. Anyway. This isn't meant to be a compare and contrast of this and other movies, just my journey on how I got here. On with the review. This movie slaps. The super distinct 90s anime style really shines in this world. It's cool to see back now, nearly 30 years ago, at how the writers used internet culture and the effects that it can have on stars and fandom. As we have all become more connected and, in a sense, more parasocial, it still seems significant today. The animation really lets the descent into paranoia and losing touch with reality stand out.

Oh god, what have I just witnessed. First of all don't let any illusion overcome you. And second of all what the heck was this film. I want to write more and more but the words are not coming to my mouth. After watching this film I'm going to respect every celebrity. "I'm real."

A depressing tale of what fame can do to a young female, PB is one of the saddest films I’ve ever seen. The creepy stalker and twist at the end both show how dark and obsessive the human nature can be, and how unhealthy our desires can get.

Satoshi Kon construye una atmósfera sofocante donde la presión mediática, la obsesión y la autoexigencia se mezclan hasta que ya no sabemos si estamos viendo hechos, delirios o culpas materializadas. No es solo un thriller psicológico, es un comentario incómodo sobre la industria del entretenimiento y sobre lo fácil que es perderse cuando tu imagen pública empieza a pesar más que tu propia voz interior. La grandeza de Perfect Blue recae en cómo convierte la confusión en experiencia emocional real. Puede sentirse fría en algunos momentos, pero esa frialdad es parte del punto; la película habla de deshumanización y la transmite formalmente. Funciona porque logra que el caos tenga coherencia interna y porque cada decisión visual parece pensada para incomodar sin exagerar.
