"What I know about is Texas, and down here, you're on your own"
Blood Simple
A fantastic slow-cooker of competing character lines-of-sight, or lack thereof, leaving a viewer hapless as the plot drops one anchor after another into the all-over predicament. What I clocked most on this re-watch was the incredible score and soundscape, particularly the ethereal build-up during the climax. Riveting stuff, and just amazing as a debut feature -- they do so, so much with so, so little. Cast is great (a young McDormand coming in fierce!) but I have to give the nod to M. Emmet Walsh and his squeaky grease stain of a private investigator.

Blood Simple
What a debut! I need to watch more neonoir, this was awesome.
Blood Simple
pretty good debut film from the coens. it’s interesting seeing a director’s first film and seeing what they take from that and develop on in their later films.
Blood Simple
I am just having an incredible time catching up on the Coen films I’ve somehow skipped in my life (I’m sure the good times will end with The Ladykillers). What a debut. This film has everything the Coens will go on to perfect. So many elements can be seen in future projects from No Country to The Big Lebowski. The script is so excellent, with just enough moving parts to keep you guessing until the end, the direction is superb, and the performances are great as well. The elements of horror that drip from the final act are so palpable, I felt like I was watching an other-world version of Halloween, which makes me desperately want a pure horror Coen film in the future. But for now, at least I have this excellent piece of filmmaking.
Blood Simple
Blood Simple. is the least bit simple. Shadows align with grief and betrayal. A simple murder; an assassination for money. Complicated gritty dollars serve as dire distraction. Cash sprawls empty. A phone ringing. A gun; a girl; an affair. A cowboy's hat. An exploding, humorous temper. A relatively simple premise that thickens in The Coen Brothers' slimy, dark, and riveting neo-noir debut. It takes its time to get itself sussed, but by the time it does, things get real intricate. Could it be that Blood Simple. is the dynamic duo's best? Perhaps. It's a damn tasty watch. Particularly the fantastic Frances McDormand. What an extraordinary debut, and how about that tense and bombastic finale? Chills.
Blood Simple
Holding all the flares and charms of the Coen Brothers. You see the seeds here and they glimmer with so much promise. Sloppy, slow start to a crushing end, which perhaps could’ve been corrected with a another draft, but all in all, a wonderful performance from a young Frances McDormand and fun transitions and mis en scene that would make Park Chan-wook happy. Back arched at the edge of my seat by the end. Love how you can full stop at climax to pack a punch.

The PI has to be one of the grossest individuals ever in a movie. Guy’s a straight slob with a stupid voice. Coen brothers strike again. A simple concept done well thanks to good dialogue and realistic enough action. Gotta love a movie in Texas; it just means more. Movie lives up to the hype; most definitely worth a watch. Starting 2026 with a 4 star; I’ll take it. 8.1
