Wes Craven's New Nightmare

Wes Craven's New Nightmare

It's been 10 years since A Nightmare on Elm Street came out. There have been 5 sequels to the film, each progressively getting worse and worse. On it's 10th anniversary, Wes Craven comes out with New Nightmare, taking us into the lives of the actors of the original film. Capturing the same spirit as the first film, New Nightmare shows Craven's ability to breathe life into a series that was dying. Freddy is back, and he's different. The first film showed Freddy Kreuger as a terrifying person, but slowly turned comedic throughout the films. In this film, we are back to his terrifying roots. Simply, he's just scarier than ever before. What I found extremely interesting about this was the fact that it took forever to even see Freddy, which is similar to the original. Freddy didn't have much screen time then, and he didn't have a lot this time around. Craven is able to create a terrifying atmosphere that doesn't need him to physically be there, but rather have the idea that he's there. Craven really is able to make the film scary without the use of the antagonist for a long time. Once Freddy comes in though, he's terrifying. New Nightmare feels fresh in the horror genre. It seems to feel like it's a reboot of the series, but it's just more of a fix to the series. While the series was financially stable, the quality of the films weren't. This film was able to take a dying concept and revitalize it into something better. I wish that the rest of the series followed suit, since it would have been much scarier and less bland. Luckily, Craven flew in to the rescue and showed how scary Kreuger could be. From it's opening scene, I knew that New Nightmare was going to be good. If it's got Craven's name on it, you pretty much know that it's going to be good. It's interesting to see the style of the film, since it's extremely similar to his next feature, Scream. Craven was a horror genius that was taken away too soon. What we have left is the amazing legacy that he created, with New Nightmare being a shining addition to his fantastic filmography.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare

Wes Craven's New Nightmare

Very meta and pretty fun! Lacks Freddy which is fine but it does mean the horror lacks just a bit. They bring back the whole - not knowing if it's a dream or not - from the first film which I loved a lot. Overall it's an alright time! I've finally done it! I've finally reviewed every Nightmare film on this platform (not counting the crossover film which I'll cover sometime soon)

Wes Craven's New Nightmare

I think this is my favorite Elm Street movie in the same way Army of Darkness is my favorite Evil Dead movie. It doesn’t really fit into the rest of the franchise, therefore its not necessarily a good movie for the franchise, BUT its a great movie on it’s own. Some really smart decisions were made here, I love all of the callbacks and meta moments.  Heather being back is great. I didn’t realize how much I missed her character (although I guess it’s not the same character, technically) until there were multiple movies without her. There were a few things that were left unanswered, like where Robert went, but I think he may have been turned in to “Freddy”? Not really sure. I do wonder a bit why “Freddy” looked a bit different. His face especially, it seemed to have more of a flesh color while also being ripped apart rather than burnt. I was also super pleased with John Saxon coming back. I gasped when he first appeared actually 😂.  They cut back on the effects quite a bit, but when they were present, they were still pretty great. 8.5/10

Wes Craven's New Nightmare

Hooptober X (https://boxd.it/oR2z6) #16 of 32 • 1 film starring Robert Englund (https://letterboxd.com/actor/robert-englund/genre/horror/) First Shadow of the Vampire (https://letterboxd.com/film/shadow-of-the-vampire/) and now this. Must be a meta kind of day. This one was ok. Freddy looks like shit (not in a good way), the addition of the kid is...annoying, and it just wasn't very scary. I can appreciate the concept but I don't think anything could ever beat the original in my eyes.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare

A bit long, and the ideas don’t always work perfectly, but when the movie works it really works. Englund in particular does a great job finding the menace in Freddy again. Love the biomechanical finger knives in this too.
