Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans

Decided to revisit one of my favorite Cage performances before seeing THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT tonight. This film has everything you’d want from a Cage performance, tapping into his ability to be unhinged and wild, and also allowing those deep moments of vulnerability that he’s capable of showcasing. Cage and Herzog feel like a match made in heaven, surprised they haven’t worked together again since.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans

An enigmatic film from a just as equally enigmatic director, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans(that’s a mouthful) is a bizarre, introspective piece of filmmaking from one of the greatest cinematic minds working today. Following the disastrous life of Terrence McDonagh after his back injury trying to rescue a prisoner in the aftermath of Katrina, as well as a nasty painkiller addiction (amongst a fair bit of other drugs), Bad Lieutenant tells a story all about morality and redemption (albeit, at varying degrees of success). Werner Herzog and Nicholas Cagetogether make for an undeniably entertaining pairing, to a fault. I felt much of the film is subsequently undermined through Herzog’s unique vision and Cage’s manic, bordering on insane, performance. It’s very meme worthy, I’ll give it that. I guess you could say I felt it was a mixed bag for me - undoubtedly entertaining, but never thought provoking, in my opinion. It’s a film lost in its own madness, but that also happens to be its strongest aspect. The soundtrack by Mark Ishamwas simply terrible however. Horrendously average in a film that is anything but.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans
