Short Term 12
Short Term 12 is an emotional powerhouse of a film. Throughout the entire film, emotions just seep from every part, every scene overflowing with different emotions. I couldn't imagine the toll that this film must have had on the actors, since it was a very realistic film that depicted very realistic real-world situations. It's always amazing to find a film that really is like real-life, that shows stories that normally don't get to be told. It's amazing to see what this film was able to accomplish, and it's a shame that this film wasn't longer, since this film could have worked perfectly as a television series. It's just a perfect example of how film can shadow real life situations, with some of the most realistic characters I've ever seen.

Perhaps the saddest thing about this film is that Brie Larson and Destin Daniel Cretton have both been so consumed by the Marvel machine in recent years. Larson (Sacramento Legend) deserves so much more, and delivers a performance that could easily tip into maudlin and overwrought. The rest of the cast is great as well, but this really struck me how much we have lost from both Larson and Cretton, hopefully we get to see more from them in this vein instead of whatever Marvel has next.

For such a sad movie at times, I couldn’t help but feel wonderfully uplifted. The part with the birthday cards got me tearing up and the relationship these kids have with the staff is just 🥺
