Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
watched the re-release for 20th anniversary i had a conversation over the weekend about how some movies benefit a lot from the context in which they exist, which is common for franchises - such as star wars obviously. my friend said that he would give endgame a 5/5 in summary because of the other movies in the series. that essentially he was grading the saga as a whole in that rating, and not taking into account the movie standing on itself. i disagreed, saying that my ratings are typically a mix of both, and in this specific franchise example, I would give a movie a 5/5 if it was great within the context, but only if it also was great on its own. endgame is not a spectactular movie on its own (if i watched it with no other marvel knowledge my enjoyment would plummet). ROTS is similar. it benefits greatly from the context. dont get me wrong, it is the best of the prequels, but that is also what makes it seem better (in comparison). however, it doesnt stand to well on its own. i can tell, because i enjoyed this less (as expected) when i am not as fresh off watching the others. i went into this remembering the fight on mustafar and the general gist, but not much else of the plot, so i was relatively on a clean slate. parts of this feel rushed. perhaps its because i also dont remember the previous movies well, but anakins betrayal of the republic makes less sense watching this again. he loved his wife and didnt want her to die, ok. but to betray your lifelong mentor and training over it, meh. hes a jedi. the movie was often over-dramatic, but it is saved by a few scenes of excellent, epic dialogue that makes for very memorable quotes and scenes. gave this a 4.5 before, i watched it in a star wars binge, and im bumping a half star. still a fun movie, its goofy in the way star wars is, and at times a bit too much. still, its a good way to close out the prequel trilogy and make things make sense for episode 4 and beyond (even if the end of the movie just felt like tying a bunch of knots or making unnecessary references to future plot points). why did padme die? she lost the will to live? or was her life force sucked away to keep anakin alive? ill have to look into that, but i dont like the way it was presented in the movie.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

"Obi-Wan, may the Force be with you." "Goodbye, old friend. May the Force be with you." Forever my go-to Star Wars movie, and a must watch on May the 4th.
