The Driver
The Driver is, for me, an extremely stylish and minimalist thriller, which I would rate a solid 4/5. The film relies less on lengthy dialogue and more on its atmosphere, its coolness, and its precise direction. What particularly impressed me was how consistently the film is reduced to the bare essentials hardly any explanations, hardly any background, instead pure tension and a focus on the characters and their dynamics. The car chases are the absolute highlight raw, realistic, and staged without unnecessary frills, which gives them a special intensity.

A beating Los Angeles backdrop, seduced by its crooks and criminals—the players, the detectives, the connections, and the drivers, each a desperado in their own hushed form. Ryan O'Neal as a cowboy behind the wheel—a getaway driver with a heart, despite it not showing immensely. This is Walter Hill's nighttime-spunk crusade of cars and noir, pursuit and defeat, and yet again the director showcases a mean nightlife of convicts and crooks—this time more subtle within its violence and wickedness, and instead illuminated by its stunning car chases. The Driver is mostly that—in fact its tense moments held within an automobile are the peak of entertainment. There are plenty moments outside of its action that work, too, but the thrill that's retained inside the grit of nighttime vehicular activity is really what makes the film great. 4.0/5

added a half star for simply how gorgeous and well shot it is. self assured, perfectly driven. sometimes a movie just evokes a feeling that can’t be replicated. hard to add that mathematically.
