the message of this film is honestly so much better than the original and i like how they ended it by making oz a “real” place other than making dorothy feel like it was just a dream. the set design, costume, and makeup goes crazy. the musical sequences are so fun and colorful, and all so beautiful. I LOVE YOU DIANA ROSS.

watched this a long time ago but did not remember much at all. having grown up to a point in which i can appreciate this more, i do. movie isnt perfect, but it is rather fun. the highlight is the songs, and to noone's surprise, Michael Jackson. his voice is just so good. these songs will be stuck in my head for a bit. i had forgotten the full story of both the original and the wiz, so it didnt feel stale. i just remembered what each character wanted. i like the idea that it was in them all along - even tho that is kinda cliche, it doesnt make it not a good message. i enjoy how black culture weaved in to put twists on elements of the original story. i feel like adaptations like this would be fun to watch - im sure there are more. i had no idea the relative timeline of this all, so it was particularly interesting to see that this was the first time quincy jones and michael jackson worked together. if only they knew what else they would create. visually it was refreshing to see all the colors and brightness that isnt as common today. part of that is because its a wizard of oz adaptation, and the other is because of the style of the time. nonetheless, it was a rather pretty watch. perfect casting - mike as scarecrow

Motown brilliance with disco flairs. How can you not love Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the scarecrow? Childhood scares from the original Wizard of Oz re-represented from humanoid graffiti coming to life and a maximalism through costuming and set that bring on a nauseating sense of theater. In all its awkwardness, its maximalism saves itself because there’s so much joy here. And if joy isn’t there, Ross holds a sorrow so full and delicate that you fear she is going to break on screen. Either through tears or even through her voice, but she sings a sweet melancholy that is so infectious that you can’t help but want to go back to the New York it portrays, not just in its wintery beginnings but in the mismatched mish-mash that is glamorized in gluttony through Oz. Black joy magnified through theater. A lot to love here. A lot of love to give here.

— Sucesso, fama e fortuna, tudo isso são ilusões. A única coisa que realmente importa é a amizade que duas pessoas podem compartilhar. The Wiz é, possivelmente, a melhor releitura que eu já vi. Provavelmente porque consegue misturar elementos extremamente fiéis ao livro e filme, assim como traz um imaginário totalmente novo que conversa muito com o que é ser um musical. Quer dizer, já começa sendo genial você colocar Diana Ross e Michael Jackson em um filme desses porque você garante que não haverá nada melhor do que isso. Colocar Oz sob a perspectiva de Nova York, trabalhando com seus bairros, problemas e imaginário próprio, me encantou. A cena do metrô, por exemplo, é absurdamente boa e traz a mesma sensação de creepypastas de espaços limitados, como backrooms, mas tudo isso nos anos 70. É uma daquelas escolhas criativas e visuais que nos mostram como a nossa realidade é a melhor fonte de inspiração. Sem contar todo o fundo narrativo voltado para a comunidade negra nesse mesmo lugar, dando holofote para a sua cultura sem caricaturizar ou beber de estereótipos.The Wiz é produto de seu tempo e, ainda assim, profundamente atemporal. As músicas são um espetáculo à parte, justamente por mesclar músicas teatrais tão óbvias para o gênero com algo moderno para a época, aproveitando muito do trabalho de Quincy Jones. “Ease on Down the Road” é totalmente viciante e fica colada na cabeça mesmo depois que a história acaba, sendo facilmente uma das melhores músicas do filme. Toda a cena da Cidade das Esmeraldas também é muito bacana e usa a música como uma ferramenta narrativa interessante, sobre as tendências e a efemeridade delas, principalmente ao descobrirmos sobre a história do Wiz. Por fim,Michael Jackson chama a atenção e, como vi o filme por ele, é impossível não notar como ele é brilhante no seu papel de Espantalho. Ele é a própria inocência encarnada, com uma inteligência gentil e um coração enorme. Foi muito engraçado ver como ele deveria ser o espantalho que acabou de aprender a dançar, mas fica muito claro que ele é o melhor dançarino de todos que estão ali. Enfim, gostei demais da experiência e me lembrou porque gosto tanto de musicais!

Love the dark fantasy aesthetic, excellent costuming, and the over the top physicalitys of each character. The songs were touching (i cried) and the dance numbers ate.
