Tales of Halloween
3 things I'm willing to say on the record as the end credits roll: 1. Friday the 31st was fun 2. Until Hellboy this was the most embarrassing thing Neil Marshall's name was attached to, and now I'm legitimately sad he has multiple embarrassing things 3. I just don't care for Lucky McKee
Tales of Halloween
Night 30 of 31 Nights of Halloween Tales of Halloween is the perfect last film to watch before Halloween itself. It manages to capture a similar sense of childhood nostalgia that Trick 'r Treat captures, having shorts that everybody can like, whether it be people who enjoy gore, or genuine frights, everything is included. All of the shorts are enjoyable and really are frightening, making Tales of Halloween one of the best horror anthologies out there, as well as one of the best Halloween day films too.

Night 20 of 31 Nights of Halloween Tales of Halloween This movie, being an anthology, should be looked at upon the shorts: Sweet Tooth: A fantastic opening short. It sets the standard for the other shorts, while being really well done and actually quite creepy. The Night Billy Raised Hell: One of my personal favorites, it adds just the right amount of comedy with the horror, giving a much lighter tone than the previous short. Trick: An actually terrifyingly real short (well, at least until the end) that could be quite plausible. The realness really is what scares me the most, since this is something that actually could happen. The Weak and the Wicked: A great backstory that leads to the ultimate climax, something that actually surprised me! Grim Grinning Ghost: My favorite short out of them all, this offers the pure chills and creepy atmosphere that should be included throughout the whole set of tales. Ding Dong: My second favorite short, adding abstract ideas with some amazing shots and creepy feel, this short really hits the spot, compared to other shorts. This Means War: Another favorite, focusing on the rivalry between Halloween decorations. The outrageousness of it and the pure idea behind it is brilliant. Friday the 31st: An amazing homage to Friday the 13th, this short is the most comedic. It's practical effects are amazing; I was actually quite stunned! The gore was perfect, adding the slasher feel instead of the supernatural feel. The Ransom of Rusty Rex: One of the more weaker shorts, it doesn't quite fulfill what it presents. It is interesting, but ends at such an odd spot, leaving you wondering what else was going to happen. Bad Seed: Another of my favorites, this short adds comedy, pure horror and a great cast together, creating an amazing ensemble that is perfect together. Altogether, I'm so happy to finally have seen this. This candy-coated nightmare is perfect for Halloween, rightfully deserving its place next to Trick 'r Treat (but will never live up to it's amazing glory).
Tales of Halloween
This film has been a staple in my Halloween marathon for the past several years. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to fit it in this year, and finally was able to revisit it. Now that it’s outside of the spooky season, I can actually appreciate this film for what it is. Rather than focusing on the dramatic, this film shows the more comedic, mischievous side of the holiday. I hadn’t noticed it before, but this film is surprisingly campy, embracing the lower budget to create segments that are just fun. Yeah, some of them are outrageous, but that’s what makes the film work. It’s definitely not Trick ‘r Treat, but this still works to create a fun Halloween anthology.
