Goké, Body Snatcher from Hell
"Humanism. Just what we need..." A schlocky, yet surprisingly effective Japanese sci-fi horror, that delivers some genuine creeps and some on-the-nose anti-war commentary during the height of the Vietnam war. What Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell (https://boxd.it/Wqg) lacks in technical skill it more than makes it up through Hajime Saitô's (https://boxd.it/1Wql) outlandish yet self-contained story about a group of people facing off against unknown cosmic horrors. Considered somewhat of a morality tale, just as Nobuo Nakagawa's (https://boxd.it/39bF) existential horrorJigoku (https://boxd.it/EfY)similarly plays out,GokeBody Snatcher from Helldelivers its message through its unapologetically pulpy direction, stilted dialogue, over the top acting, and genuinely eerie cinematography. It's bonkers and reminds me so much of Branded to Kill (https://boxd.it/1HSQ)by Seijun Suzuki (https://boxd.it/KNl), yet it managed to be so damn engaging and I think that's a testament to Hajime's imaginative vision as a director.
