The joys, the sorrows, and where he gave his 90’s teen characters so much room to become themselves, here he uses 2-to-1 cuts that allow us to stay level to his characters. Mis-en-scene + Ambience → Character. And there are direct moments where specific scenes are then cut to a different time, to a character’s face, to create a seamlessness in sentiment. It’s about getting back on your feet. It’s also about getting to your feet by means you wouldn’t think would work, but do. It’s about falling in love with other people’s appreciations in the way they perceive the world, even if it isn’t the most profitable way in going about things. Sometimes those meager means of living really do say more than the money earned and shown. Perhaps I’ll always be poor in life but my goddamn heart on my sleeve will keep me from killing myself. I read somewhere that Thomas Bernhard said something along the lines of: “𝘔𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦.” And maybe that’s how I’ve always prevented myself from getting to the other side.
