All of the witch scenes were scary, which is all I could ask for from a '60s foreign horror film. And then the last fifteen minutes were insane even by those standards. So yeah, any pacing issues the first half or half-hour had, I completely forgive. Historic not just for being the first Soviet-era horror film, but for being a rare film of the era that really pushed further than other typical genre features were willing to

Fable-bound mirth and mischief, the controlled chaos of technicolor bones and a steady heady brew unfolding amidst a dreamy pastoral stage. Russian daze... and even longer nights!

Isso aqui ser de 1967 é loucura, é a frente do tempo. Absurdo demais os efeitos, cenários e história. O que a bruxa tem de bonita, ela tem de bizarra. Muito foda.

HOOPTOBER #12 A FILM FROM A FORMER SOVIET STATE _____________ still got 19 more left of these to do before the end of the month. hoo boy. this one was short and sweet which is good. this was kind of more fun than i was expecting, lots of spooky vibes in certain parts that are mostly near the end. the first hour is a bit slower but still interesting and there’s this neat atmosphere to it all with what looks to be really nice matte painting backgrounds.

#32 of 31 Days of Madness: October 2017 (https://boxd.it/1fIvM) A surreal and then some fantasy-horror, beautified within its sacred moments of witch-like visions and bubbling camera work—this folk tale is a genuinely mesmerizing experience to say the least. It's too bad Viy isn't the consistently dreamlike fantasy it could have been; outside of its best moments the film is somewhat sluggish and filled with singing drunks. It's pretty much forgotten though when the hypnotic terror is unleashed on screen, with its finale being the over-the-top display of Satan's best friends and all—from skeletons to vampires and werewolves, it's enthralling to watch, especially next to the impressive cinematography and special effects that the film holds. Its run-time is short at just under 80 minutes, and it really could have been cut shorter, mostly because of the heavy instances outside of the surreal stuff. However, the film paints a magnificent depiction of religion and its nightmarish contradictions, all the while bringing an old folk tale into fascinating view. 3.8/5

the entire experience of this film is like riding the peter pan ride for the first time wondrous fear—
