Arthouse films aren't for everyone. They're 100% for me though, it takes a rare one for me to not be impressed or in love Swallow isn't a rare one. Effectively gross at times when it needs to have impact. surprisingly tense at times when you expect (or even just hope for) one scene of calm and things to go right. Haley Bennett is fantastic as Hunter, a woman who really just wants...things to go right? She lies about being happy, she gets interrupted all the time, her thoughts are invalidated at best and not really cared about or considered frequently, and her husband doesn't give a shit about sympathy for what she's going through unless it directly benefits him The one time Hunter gets a semblance of doing anything other than coasting on autopilot, it's squashed with the revelation of her being pregnant; even the announcement doesn't get her compassion, the husband is more focused on spreading the news (he does that a lot, spreading information it's either not his responsibility to give, or that he should wait to provide) to family than on checking to see if she's even ready for that responsibility Highly recommend this tale of control, addiction, loneliness, validation, self-destruction, and choice. Enough good can't be said about how well Haley Bennett makes this all come together and work so well

53/100 I feel like this narrative of blaming rape for everything wrong with your current life is overused. That being said, I felt for her, for quite some time as I couldn’t understand why she did it but I knew there was a reason and the moment they related it to the rape is when this movie went downhill for me. I see many people blaming the guy and his parents and I hated them initially too. I did think if he asked her what she wanted and what she liked every once in a while, she probably wouldn’t go to such lengths to find some sort of gratification or a sense of control from elsewhere. But eventually, I sided with him, at least partially considering she was harming their child, not “his” child, their child! She was doing all this shit and not thinking of a life growing inside of her. What is the logic, she wanted to kill the kid because she didn’t want someone born like she was, to the wrong partner? What? The whole film is a bit too far-fetched and I would say they should’ve given it more time but they made it boring in a short runtime so no thank you. The plot was there and everything was set up but the correlation and explanation was lacking. That failed the whole film. Haley Bennett is good and the rest are just ordinarily supporting. It was shot well too. Also, what about the end? Is she just gonna eat shit and bleed out to death eventually, rupturing her asshole to bits, internal bleeding and shit? Like what was that ending of her going out happily? Maybe I’m just not sensitive or wise enough to understand this but you treat pica or you die.

This movie was not what I expected, it was marketed more as a thriller/horror film, and while it has some elements of that, it’s much more of a psychological character piece. Bennet’s performance is outstanding, and the film’s gorgeous visuals work in tandem with the story to conceal the darkness at its core.

the last 30 minutes. i relate to her in a sense that i cannot explain here. the more the film unfolds, idk if this triggered me or not. anyway, i love how she touches her bob.

Wait, this was released in 2019? Great, thought I could shoddily add this to my top 10 for 2020. A breath of fresh air when it comes to characters tackling past trauma and mental health. Wish I'd gotten more of the tactile experiences that would've made me squirmed in my seat like Raw did, but it sufficed as a great drama.

Increíblemente contada Swallow se burla de la cotidianidad doméstica elitista mientras la asfixiante relación empuja a descubrir el termino “la Pica” en el embarazo, aquí todo puede llegar a ser muy intenso pero hay un propósitos bastante potente que hará valer la pena de principio a fin, Haley Bennett esta impecable en su interpretación.
