The Birth of a Nation
This is one of those movies where two things are true at the same time: it is an incredibly well-made and influential film that paved the way for many future movies to come, and it is also an undeniably racist, bigoted, and ugly film. It is basically broken up into two acts. One that is actually a pretty decent portrayal of the American Civil War and Reconstruction. The Reconstruction half…oh man, that is when things really start to get problematic. I remember when I watched BlacKkKlansman a few years ago, they had a scene where the KKK was watching this part of the movie and celebrating as the Clan was wreaking havoc on the newly freed slaves, who were portrayed as super offensive stereotypes and evildoers. It is very uncomfortable to watch. It's not a movie that should be celebrated for its content in any way, but I do understand why it was so important in the scope of film history. I've also held the belief, being from the South, the Confederacy does not represent being American or even being proud of the South. There are many things to be proud of: food, music, and a lot of cultural things, a lot of which came from the enslaved. The Confederacy are the traitors. They seceded from the US. They can all rot in hell. So once the movie was over, I turned on Union Dixie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhSzuhdIkuE) as a nice palate cleanser.

The Birth of a Nation left me utterly speechless. I really wish that I could conjure up some sort of review, but this film was so profound. I don't see why this film is getting so many negative reviews. It's close to the same level as 12 Years a Slave when it comes to importance. Films are usually meant to entertain, but there are some that are meant to inform. The Birth of a Nation informs about an extraordinary story, a story that every person needs to hear. Even after finishing this film hours ago, I am utterly speechless.
