nothing much scarier than a real life horror
The Black Phone
One of the most well put together films I’ve watched in a long time, squeezes so much out of its premise and executed wonderfully. Some fantastic performances by the kids and the Hawke himself, and inspired but uncliched characterizations of a story that is familiar. Just great vibe creation and manifestation all around. Dragged maybe a tiny bit in the middle act, but reaches a satisfying conclusion that you don’t mind.
The Black Phone
Going into this I expected a lot more than what we actually got, the films not bad but it’s far from great. The Grabber is the villain and what do we know about said villain: He’s evil, he kills children and he likes masks. That’s about it. He’s the most surface level villain ever created. We don’t find out anything, and I mean anything, about him. Sure, he has a brother, but that’s not character development as we never once see them interact (bar the killing). The film isn’t very scary after the half way point either and the end is just meh. The acting is good and that’s why it’s slightly above average for me, plus the sister is pretty cool.

Ethan Hawke and Scott Derrickson need to keep doing work together if his performance here (only second-fav to the sister's, and creepy as hell throughout!) and the sum total of Sinister are the results
