Kimi

I don't know how else to word this other than to say either Soderbergh one of the more consistently claustrophobic-feeling directors, or that his Contagion, Unsane, and now Kimi are an astoundingly-consistent-in-quality trilogy Of the feeling of claustrophobia made manifest To say you're suffering from paranoia is to imply that a) it's not for good reason and b) everyone else isn't right now too. I don't know how else you could even rewatch Contagion at any point in the last two years and not conclude that, in addition to concluding Soderbergh was way more optimistic than he should've been of how we'd handle a situation like that. Unsane expands further on that with a tale of a woman who thinks she's being watched and followed, eventually being proven correct Kimi is life in 2022, with all the pros and cons that entails; if the cons are the majority, it's not sanitized to make you feel better. COVID hasn't gone away, it's just something a population has given up on fighting and adjusted to living amongst. We don't think we're being watched and followed: we are fully aware we are, and we have devices all over our houses that make it easier than ever for people/corporations to do that to us, and it's another thing we've just given up on fighting and deal with because they make it easier for us to do things like play music or change TV channels or adjust room lights to match our mood. If we're bleeding out, we should at least try to get comfy What plays out over the tense 87 minutes in this HBO Max-exclusive (Soderbergh's second, following the also-pretty-good No Sudden Move) is the depiction of a complacent employee of a corporation in control of one of such devices, who gets shaken out of her comfort zone when she finds out 1) one of the devices she tracks the recordings of was online in the middle of a murder, and 2) her bosses really don't want that being reported. Zoe Kravitz gives a great performance (including in the opening act when she lays bare the trauma she'll eventually have to try overcoming if she wants to get the truth out), and the last act is well done Soderbergh's put out a new film a year (minimum) for the last six. I don't doubt the streak continues next year. Here's hoping it's more like this, Unsane, or No Sudden Move; he clearly still has a lot more good to offer as long as he's willing to try. Let's just not talk about The Laundromat, which I still haven't had the guts to finish

❝Why can't things just be good? Why do things always have to be the best?❞ · · ───── ⊹⊱∆⊰⊹ ───── · · I chose to watch Kimi on a whim during a very long flight, and I was pretty surprised at how good it was. The concept isn't anything particularly new, but the acting and execution carry it. Zoë Kravitz was excellent as Angela, and I think the rest of the cast were pretty decent too. I absolutely loved Angela's hair/wardrobe and apartment; the camerawork and cinematography matched the slightly eccentric vibe both indoors and out-and-about, as well as the delightfully whimsical soundtrack. However, the final third of the film felt very rushed, and that really brought down the entire watching experience. All in all, though, a great way to spend an hour and a half 12,000 metres in the air.

An update on BLOW OUT/THE CONVERSATION. Surprised something like this hasn’t already been done, it’s a conceit that’s full of potential. Kravitz is unsurprisingly good. Interesting supporting cast, great energetic and dynamic camera work from Soderbergh. 2022 Ranked (https://boxd.it/fSyMM)

Kimi, play Sabotage. What can I say? I love it when a film is paced well. AndKIMI is just that. A tight and efficient, lesser, Rear Window for our times. Though the film doesn’t have that many moving parts to it, it still managed to always be doing something to hold my interest. Instagram commentator Zoë Kravitz is good here (playing both a blue and pink haired liberal) and really holds the film down during its third act. A point towards the film is that it made me think living in Seattle maybe wouldn’t be so bad. Those loft apartments…gorg.

83/100 Great but would’ve been cooler if she was in the apartment the whole time and the movie was about her using the internet to try and find out what happened.

“Kimi! play Sabotage!” An incredibly uneven film from the great Steven Soderbergh, Kimifollows the story of Angela (Zoë Kravitz) on the run after uncovering a recording of a crime from a Kimi device - akin to an Alexa. I’ll keep it short, the film feels very lacking in the narrative department - especially surprising seeing as the writer of the film is David Koepp, well known for his screenplays including that of Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, and Panic Room (then again, he IS credited for writing the screenplay for 2017’s The Mummy, so...). The film looks nice, but aside from that Kimidoes not do much for me. On a personal note, I simply despise it being set during Covid because I am so damn sick of it, I don’t want to see it in movies. Please for the love of God, stop. 2022 Ranked (https://boxd.it/eXPAu)💻
