Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Horrifyingly beautiful, easy to see why it was a Malaysian shortlist for the Oscars. But hey, I have enough rants to give about the Oscars, especially later this week when they snub nominating the actual best performance of 2021 Kristen Stewart for Spencer. Fuck the Academy
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Soul paints a haunting portrait on a minimal budget. It may take a bit to actually get to the meat of the story, it still is a visually stunning film, taking advantage of the natural beauty to create a surreal film. There are some truly shocking moments, which lead to an unforgettable climax. It’s not the type of film that I’d expect a country would choose to submit for nomination, but I’m glad to see a true horror film compete. It’s been an interesting year, with several horror films that were submitted, which is quite refreshing, knowing that people want horror to have a spot within the Academy.

“We are wolves disguised as men.” Watched JIN-ROHlast night and at the time of finishing the film I was sitting at a much lower rating. But it’s been living in my head since then and I can’t help but find myself more and more enraptured with this beautiful dark twisted fairytale, a macabre and fascistic retelling of Little Red Riding Hoodthat leaves you in a strange emotional daze as the final frame fades to black. What a tragedy. Who will we hurt, sink our bloodied teeth into, to become who we need to be? Perhaps more troubling—what will we become? Phenomenal. We surrounded by the fuckin’ wolves. - Old Pablo Proverb
