Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

PRINCES OF THIEVES is like if The Princess Bride was less funny and it took itself more seriously. A very odd tone to go with, no? Though I’m sure that some 2-movie a year millennial out there has this as their favorite movie, so it clearly works for some people. As for me… Well, Costner is charming and handsome as always but not even his charisma can save the film from itself, if the director doesn’t want to save it himself. Allowing Morgan Freeman to get away with that terrible on and off again accent for two hours is beyond egregious. It would have been better if he didn’t have one at all. It’s distracting and little bit insulting that neither Freeman or the director tried. The writing is very…well, not good and the action is so so—when it gets outlandish and defies physics it’s fun. There’s just very few things about this movie that works but if I had to highlight a few I’d say the brotherhood/class solidarity aspect with the Merry Men is nice and the score by Hans Zimmer is great. It’s also incredibly nostalgic and I feel like I must have heard it in a trailer on one of the VHS/DVDs I owned because I knew it by heart. Very 90s Hans (good). Verdict: Chop.
