Lo que me llama mucho la atención es como la brujería y el esoterismo está estrechamente ligado en el contexto socioeconómico en el que se desarrolla la película: En gente que vive en la crisis y la pobreza. Lo digo porque a tres casas de la mía hay un tipo que aparenta vender ropa medio pirata pero su trabajo principal es el esoterismo (afuera tiene un altar enorme a la Santa Muerte pero ese es otro tema). Mucho de estas prácticas se usan para atraer la riqueza, traerle algo malo a tu enemigo o, como en la película, traer el amor. La película tiene un ambiente hostil, lleno de sucesos extraños que aunque la película no afirme explicitamente sean obra directa de la protagonista o extrañas coincidencias, es evidente como le otorga un poder a Natalia, un poder que no tiene en su casa y que aplica para vengarse de un amor que no fue correspondido. Me pareció interesante la propuesta, siendo un principiante en el terror, esta película me pareció inteligente en la forma de mostrar estos hechos paranormales mezclados con esta trama coming of age que es el camino para que el terror salga a la luz. A fin de cuentas, el ser adolescente es un horror ahora imagínate pelear por el amor de alguien que no te ve con los mismos ojos.

A slow burner , coming - of - age drama with a supernatural element . Firstly , I love how Natalia ( or Nati ) , played by an astounding Dolores Oliverio , was written . A no - nonsense teenager navigating her teenage girlhood in the summer of 2001 amidst an ongoing economic crisis and is obsessively pursuing her friend , Diego even at the expense of Diego's girlfriend Silvia . She lives on her own terms , masturbates , listens to music , wears make up , goes shopping and even takes her friend to a male escort so that she can pop her cherry . Sexual desire and jealousy aside , the pure female rage in her eyes during the climax where she lets out a single drop of tear and during the phone call with Silvia were the only times Nati was shown as vulnerable . Such a layered and intriguing character . I think the spell worked because I am indeed spellbound to this film . Kudos to the makers . As the proverb goes " Hell hath no greater fury than a woman scorned " , that's The Virgin of the Quarry Lake for you . Had a grin on my face when it was revealed to be short stories adapted from a book by Mariana Enriquez . I might pick up the book sometime .
