"Transcendence. I guess that was Necro speak for "Get the fuck off our ship and make it forever." Fine by me."
Riddick
RIDDICKis only free from a 1-star rating because of Vin’s sheer charisma and how great the character of big dick Riddick is. Now, I thought I had seen this before and to be fair to myself, maybe I have. If so though, it’s completely understandable as to why I forgot all about it. This entry is, somehow, worse than the last one. As I said I thought the shift from horror/sci-fi to the space opera genre was bold, and interesting—just poorly done. I thought if the team put more effort into the follow-up I could easily be won over. Reader, I was not won over. Instead of building upon what they started in the last one, Vin and co. hit the reset button and decided to ditch the space opera angle and go back to basics. Again, interesting idea. Again, poorly executed. After embroiling Riddick into the Necros’ fascist intergalactic regime, you could at least explore in depth what that means for Riddick. But they barely touch on this in way that I found meaningful. The attempt to re-tread Pitch Black falls flat and lacks the sleazy thrills and well placed horror of that first film. Most offensive of all: it looks ugly. Something no one can say about Pitch Black. The space dog is cool though.
