I Start Counting
“What does the Pope have against the pill?” An interesting and layered look at the blossoming sexual maturity of a 15 year old girl that has fallen in love with her step brother, who she suspects as the one responsable for a string of deaths. I Start Countingis a unique coming of age story dealing with trauma, loss, and taboos neatly tied with the looming threat of potential murder. I though Jenny Agutter’s portrayal of a young girl navigating the complex emotions of adolescence and dealing with said trauma convincing. A stand out performance, for sure. DirectorDavid Greenedoes a wonderful job at showcasing his sensitive and skillful manner to compose a compelling and interesting story — not to mention the great shots by Alex Thomsonthat effectively convey an eerily haunting atmosphere. I find 70’s cinema does a great job at visually exploring character’s state of mind very much like one of the other Collab films we watched, Puzzle of a Downfall Child. Not only did I find myself interested in seeing our protagonist navigate these complex emotions, I was equally as enthralled in attempting to figure out who the killer was (albeit, the killed plot line is sidelined, but for good reason). A real, honest to God Collab W. Watched for the Collab. (https://boxd.it/bciZ6)
