Everyone Says I Love You

I watched this a week after I finished the Allen v. Farrow documentary by HBO. It's so interesting to look at history, wondering whether or not to follow things by timeline, how to do it with co-current sentiments and events, and how we should look at the works from our individual viewpoints. I'm just about done seeing Allen's filmography and this one was interesting because it is a musical. It strays quite far from his other films because you either dive deep into the unreal or the real. Woody had been making real films for a long time, unlike his "earlier funnier ones." And musicals, as a genre, dip into the unreal in a very real way. Or they are real and dip into unreal ways. Vice versa, whatever the case you want to argue, it's a return in some ways, done in a messy yet gleeful way. It's Woody, it seems, struggling to find footing in happiness, in contentment. And it shows. The ending scene breaks my heart. Not because of its magical last dance, but because Allen's acting is so horrendous that I almost pity him. That you can see the exteriors of his life toppling over him, and I don't know where to place this film in his canon. It took a month to really center myself in where I see this one in his filmography, and so, there you have it, an unreal film that reveals too much of the real.
