The Purge: Election Year

The final film in the original purge trilogy, and this one didn’t disappoint. A great story which gets you really invested in the characters, you find yourself really routing for Leo and the senator to survive. The best purge I’ve seen so far.

The Purge: Election Year

Purge: Election Year (2016)feels distinctly different from the first two movies in the franchise. On the one hand, we have a little bit more background to the premise - yay! On the other hand, it feels different and not in a good way. It’s the way the second half of the film is edited. We get blurs and slow-mos and fade outs and odd transitions to next scenes. The film felt distinctly more… indie? That being said, good performance from Elizabeth Mitchell but definitely some of the supporting cast overacted and it took me out of it. Some tried a little to hard. I’ll give it props for coming out on an actual election year

The Purge: Election Year

It's really interesting to see the development of the Purge franchise. The first film, which I did enjoy, didn't seem to live up to it's full potential story wise. In comes The Purge: Anarchy, where things seemed to be more of what you would expect; insane violence and destruction in the city. I didn't think that they were going to be able to top Anarchy, but then they released Election Year. The Purge: Election Year is the most successful of the franchise. It's political roots, even from the first, are really prevalent through the series, but it stands out the most in the latest installment. Instead of having the focus be on normal people, Election Year focuses instead on politicians, most importantly a woman who wants to stop the annual purge. These films are extremely blunt in showing their political views, and they seem to yell it out in this one. It's interesting seeing a film be so political, especially in a year of an election. This is what a Purge film should be; gritty, intense, captivating, and visually stunning. I was extremely impressed by the visual element of the film. The cinematography was stunning, especially in the scene with the people hanging in the trees. The costumes were something to point out as well, with them being much more elaborate than the plain clothing and masks of the other films. The violence is as prevalent as ever, as well as the grittiness of Anarchy. All of these elements work together to make Election Year a fun film to watch. Is there a need for some more Purge movies? I'm not sure if there is, but I would really like to see some more. The idea that they first were going to do for this film, documenting the first Purge, would have been really interesting to see. Hopefully the team that creates these movies come together again to create some more films.
