Honey Boy

An intensely intimate portrait of stardom, Honey Boy strikes an emotional chord that nearly everyone can relate to. LaBeouf and director Alma Har’el’s hybrid creation is one of my favorite films of the year, and I’m so glad that we finally got showtimes in Vegas.

Honey Boy

Beginning to believe that Shia has honed the craft of being able to communicate with people heart to heart without a missing beat. There were plenty of scenes written about vulnerability outside of different power hierarchies that I was completely blown away by: - the moment in which FKA Twigs cuddled with a young Shia, the tenderness, the unexpected little games, thumb war, the fluidity of how we can create relationships without barriers - the moments in which father and son speak past pent up aggressions - the chemistry of all the actors and actresses as Noah Jupe is an absolute triumph (I'm thinking of the scene in which he transcribes the telephone call between him and his mother to his father, even following the emotional nuances and emphases on words - all as an actor playing an actor) and, of course, FKA Twigs whose gentle approach to her character is absolutely mesmerizing. I think what felt flat to me was the rehab center and how we lose heart for Lucas Hedges' portrayal of a crushed Otis. See, Shia playing his father was a tough role to pull off, to be a destructive dad yet show very tender sides. With Lucas, we only got the destructive nature without heart until the very end of the film. The running time seemed to have cut short the potential to weaving the timescapes to something more smothering when it comes to empathy.
