Rumble Fish

There's a rumble in the jungle. The rumble is Rusty James; The jungle is Tulsa, Oklahoma. Francis Ford Coppola's, Rumble Fish, is a film with its bogged down occasions, and its phenomenally well crafted occasions. It does still puzzle me what my true response is. Maybe after another viewing I'd appreciate the quieter, toned down scenes. Maybe the ending would be extra satisfying. Whatever I think now, it could change in an hour and a half afterwards second viewing. But for now my gut openly tells me Rumble Fish's opening twenty minutes was the portion I found to out-weigh the rest of the film - by a mile. Not saying other scenes didn't have their excitement - they did, but I was too busy looking for more oomph. Character's relationship included, although I did admire Rusty (Matt Dillon) and his brother (Mickey Rourke). These two had some solid scenes and an interesting connection. Mentioning the pair, the whole cast can't go unnoticed. Lawrence Fishburne, Nicolas Cage, Chris Penn, Dennis Hopper, freaking Tom Waits! That's a cast I love to hear yet their characters, one by one, lacked insight. In the end, Rumble Fish is a film I'd love to understand further. GRADE: B+
