Mary Poppins Returns

I can recall the first time that I ever watched Mary Poppins vividly to this day. I was in my kindergarten music classroom, my teacher sat all of us down and rolled out the television, put in the VHS tape, and we all were transported to a world filled with wonder, song, and dance. I was transfixed from the very first moment I laid eyes on the film, and that awe still resonates with me. While I haven't seen the original Mary Poppins for many years, the memories I have of it still linger on. After hearing that there was going to be a sequel, which featured Emily Blunt, I knew that the film was going to be a worthy sequel. And in the loving hands of Rob Marshall, Mary Poppins Returns certainly is a worthy sequel. It's been a long time since I watched a film that left me feeling like I was that kindergartener again, and this film certainly did it for me. It's one of the rare Disney film that emulates what the classics brought; a fun atmosphere with lovable characters, paired with some great songs. While Julie Andrews has stepped down as Mary, Emily Blunt manages to be just as memorable and lovable as Andrews was. Mary Poppins Returns is a film that I want to watch again in theaters, just so I can spend as much time as I can enjoying this film. Unfortunately, I wasn't in the best of moods while watching this film, so I had some problems with some of the songs, especially the ones with Lin-Manuel Miranda, but I think that if I watch it in a better mood I'll enjoy those songs more. Altogether, Mary Poppins Returns is a great return for Mary, and one of the better Disney films that I've seen recently. It was nice to escape reality for a little while, and be transported right back into that kindergarten music room so long ago.

Mary Poppins Returns

The Year is 2018: Ranked and Reviewed (https://boxd.it/1OIs4) The wind blows; leaves pick up and twirl like little tornadoes. There's a storm brewing; the sky darkens and from out of its clouds, as they begin to separate, is a familiar outfit. It's in this space of about a minute, that Mary Poppins Returns—Disney's latest venture into capturing its classic days with bright FX—lets it be known that the Walt Disney icon from 1964 is an unaltered uniform that has changed face, yet, returns with the exact fashion and presence. Wherever Mary Poppins wanders she brings the spectacle and the delight along with her—it's too bad her return is simply just that and nothing else. For a film so bright and fizzy, Mary Poppins Returns feels so uninspired and, at times, so unexciting. The songs aren't very memorable—their mostly carbon copies of the original, yet, don't capture the same magic—and the whole film just feels like one "dazzling" sequence after the other. But it isn't a total disaster; the film has moments of true spectacle, being it the choreography of dancers, or the neat hand-drawn animation that enlightens the film a lot during one of its sequences. Nevertheless, there isn't a lot to fall in love with here. 2.7/5
