If Beale Street Could Talk

Barry Jenkins yet again has created an intimate portrait of life. With Moonlight, he was able to show growth, show how love transforms a person. With If Beale Street Could Talk, he takes a completely different route - allowing us to watch love flourish despite adversity. It's a film that is filled with love - unfiltered love that bleeds in ever scene. This is a subtle film, slowly creeping along as we watch Fonnie and Tish attempt to live their lives. It's a gorgeous film, both aesthetically and in a storytelling sense. Moonlight definitely made an impact on me, but I believe that this one moved me even more. It's a stunning love story, and one that deserved to be told. I didn't think that Jenkins could have topped what he did with Moonlight, but with If Beale Street Could Talk, he makes it all look too easy. He has proven he's a dynamic filmmaker, and one that demands attention. If Beale Street Could Talk is one of the best films of 2018, and it's a shame that I wasn't able to get it in last year, since it definitely would have taken one of the top spots. I am absolutely floored after finishing it, and will have nothing but praise for it.
