Bewitched

My second Kuei Chih-hung film after his 1980 hit Hex, Bewitched arrived just a year later—after he’d already released two other films in that same short stretch (talk about efficient). Part of the Shaw Brothers horror cycle, it’s loaded with gross-out body horror that often gets written off as pure exploitation. Honestly, I think that’s a bit of a disservice to the filmmaking on display. Bewitched, like Hex, uses the supernatural as a way to filter real cultural anxieties through some genuinely inventive craft. This one, in particular, digs into the clash between modernity and the spiritual, and the eternal battle between good and evil. The story follows Stephen Lam Wai (Fei Ai), a Hong Kong tourist who unknowingly gets cursed after a casual affair with a woman in Thailand—an overreaction, to be sure. Inspector Bobby Wong (Wong King-Sun) investigates Wai for murder and gets pulled into a long, bloody chain of black magic and evil sorcerers. The plot is, undeniably, a bit of a mess, but Kuei seems far more interested in immersing you in folklore, magic, and superstition than delivering something compelling in a conventional narrative sense. And thankfully, that’s where the film really shines. As it goes along, title cards announce each new curse—presented in this oddly matter-of-fact, semi-clinical manner similar to some kind of black-magic “how-to” manual. Worms, blood, guts, and slime practically coat the entire experience, giving Bewitched a particularly nasty atmosphere. Cinematographer Li Hsin-Yeh is also a huge part of why this landed so well for me. The film looks incredible and is chock-full of inventive visual choices. The dayglo effects—fluorescent lighting that absorbs UV and re-emits it as brighter, more saturated color—paired with prismatic ring lens filters that turn light into something kaleidoscopic, makes the violence feel genuinely singular in its style. Really enjoyed my time with this, and I’m loving the deeper dive into Kuei Chih-hung’s long, prolific filmography. Hex is what pushed me to grab Vol. 4 of Arrow’s Shawscope set, but Bewitched is what makes me glad I bit the bullet. Wonderfully strange. Beautifully shot. ᐅ Watched in 2026 — Ranked (https://boxd.it/RjcIq)
