Oblivion
Just had a hankering to return briefly to a one-off M83-infused sci-fi concept reel. And now with an eye towards some of what was done practically, such as the wrap-around projection and sky tower set (an early incarnation of what would later be lauded on The Mandalorian) along with that scale bubble ship and cockpit gimble sequences. It is still extremely funny, though, to hear them starting to emphasize that "in camera / it's real" line as far back as 2013.

77/100 Two things are guaranteed in a Joseph Kosinski movie - excellent CGI and visuals & an ecstatic soundtrack which is why you will always come out of the film satirised even if the other elements were lacking. Now I have watched this film before but I simply cannot count this as a rewatch because I only remember glimpses of the four main characters and Morgan Freeman being a villain because of his looks so yes, not a memorable watch. This film has its merits, the plot gradually complicates and ends with you having many questions but I do believe that it partially due to poor editing in the second half and the sequencing towards the end when trying the explain the origin of Tet. I liked the performances of Tom Cruise and Andrea but not Olga as much and Morgan Freeman didn’t really have much to do other than look cool. Nikolaj’s job was to look badass and come in clutch and he did it perfectly. Halfway through the film, I went online to check some reviews because at the point, I thought this was going to be one of my highest rated sci-fis, sure it had the usual plot progression (create a sense of mystery out of perfection and introduce an event to disrupt everything and thereby investigate) but it was done well, looked great and had an unique setup. Then I saw the reviews were quite mixed and they manifested right in-front of my eyes. It got worse with the second half. The writing became poor partially because there was more of it in terms of dialogues which is why they couldn’t cope with the complexity of the story they had, they made it childish. Some of the action was poorly choreographed too. Everything seemed crumbled up as the film went on, either they could’ve stretched it longer which I wouldn’t mind or they could’ve cut a bit of the drone action which got boring real fast. Anyway, it’s a good morning watch and I always appreciate good CGI.
Oblivion
Just a cool and pretty sci-fi movie. Also, Tom Cruise.
Oblivion
I feel like there’s at least 3 good ideas in here, but when combined together, they make an incredibly meh film. For what’s its worth it’s gorgeous, and absolutely stunning to look at. (It’s the same director of Tron: Legacy, so no reason to be surprised) Also, the soundtrack, my god M83 created some of the most breathtaking scores for a sci-fi film I’ve ever heard. Starwaves.....yeah....yeah. And yes, Tom Cruise did look hot, I don’t give a fuck next question.
