Minding the Gap
Minding the Gap is a heartbreaking documentary following a group of young men attempting to live their lives, while their past traumas continue to haunt them. Domestic violence is something that is unfortunately still prevalent in many homes today, and this film documents just a few cases, and shows just how if affects the lives of everyone involved. It dives into how people cope, and how that coping moves them to be who they are. It's heartbreaking to see what these men have had to endure, and even more knowing that these are just a few cases of the countless that go on. It's an interesting look into masculinity as well, and how father-figures can drastically alter how a person perceives life. It's clear that the director, Bing Liu, has some stakes here, since he seems to care so much for everyone, and eventually reveals the trauma in his past. I'm surprised at how personal and revealing this documentary is, since the synopsis made it seem like it was just going to be a documentary version of Mid90's. I'm very glad that it wasn't, since this really is one of the strongest documentary features of the year. It's deeply saddening to know that domestic violence occurs to people very day, and many cannot get out of the situation.

Fuck i don't know what to say.
Minding the Gap
No Strings Attached: A Continuing List of Cherished Favorites (https://boxd.it/1fXU8) An honest-to-god exemplary achievement in the most rawest of film-making, Minding the Gap stirs up a powerhouse of emotion and gut-punching after effects, projected in the ever so purest form of explicit truth within three young skaters and the backwash of their town, their home, and their families. With footage collected over a number of years, filmmaker Bing Liu pulls together a collage of friendship and growing up, with its sudden switch to adulthood, full of responsibilities and rationalization. Seeing Liu connect the dots between each focused friendβeven himselfβas a result of their upbringing is shocking and stirring to say the least. But it's really a small insight into a much bigger issue that carries throughout many others lives. With this rewatch, I came out appreciating it a ton fuck more. And yes, I did tear up and so should you. 4.7/5
Minding the Gap
This device cures heartache. Minding the Gap literally has what Mid90s wants. I did not expect this is hit as close to home as it did. Itβs more than just a film about a group skater bros, itβs about guys who are coming into their adulthood but still struggling with the issues the faced in their formative years. Domestic abuse, self-doubt, and the cycle of hurt from parent to child all take front and center in this film. An incredibly strong debut from Bing Liu.
