Star Wars: The Force Awakens

An unfortunate experience. I can't even tell at what point it occurred, but I've made the disconnect. The original trilogy was what sent me into sci-fi and fantasy in general -- must've watched that twenty, thirty times growing up. I think I might have read almost every Star Wars book published before 1997 or so. I genuinely enjoyed much of the prequel trilogy at one point, even viewing Attack of the Clones twice in theaters. I was just enjoying the world that had been created, relishing the concept artist sandbox, and always, always that comforting, rich, enveloping layer of nostalgia. With this latest chapter I'm realizing I'm not the SW participant I used to be and will likely be just fine without another dose of the Force. I caught myself comparing it to any other film. But Star Wars is too massive, too ingrained in culture and childhoods for basic cinema analysis, seems to me, even as I'm exiting the fandom. There's the idea it really ought be measured against itself and how it fulfills its own purpose within the SW framework. I'm looking around, hearing friends talk about it, and this thing has moved fans in a very meaningful way. The nostalgia bonfire is burning bright and I'm glad the film works for so many people in such a positive way.

Saw it the once back in 2016, only real thing that's changed since then is the sharp rise in disgust towards Disney with every passing season.

They had an opportunity to do something really fresh and new. And instead they played it safe. I love all of the new characters, Poe, Rey, and Finn are fantastic as the leads. Unfortunately it's the story that's lacking, not the characters. Hopefully Rian will be able to take the franchise somewhere new.
