growing up sucks on its own and having a strong and good support system makes a huge difference and im glad that margaret has those. parents who are supportive, who does not force her to do anything, who sits with her when she doesn’t want to talk, and will be there for her to get her back up when she’s down. parents who i wished i had but i guess not everyone’s lucky like that. anyway i cried by the last 30 minutes. rachel mcadams and abby’s performance are incredible, they perfectly encapsulates a good mother & daughter relationship. their dynamic is just so good most especially with that one scene where margaret finally got her period and they were both crying, it just felt like barbara was going through it with margaret and it just warms my heart a bit, i need barbara to be my mother actually.

watching this while being on my period... oh to be naive and an innocent twelve year old again who envies their friends who already have their periods, not knowing the hell they're about to experience every month for the next 30+ years. this was a perfect depiction of being a tween girl: the struggle with your religious faith as you start becoming your own person, the changes your body is about to go through and awaiting them with impatience, first experiences with boys and finding out how much of a pain in the ass they all are. such a heartwarming and touching movie. i didn't appreciate my girlhood for many reasons, but now that i'm older, more comfortable with my gender identity and more aware of what i was going through at that age, i'm glad to have movies like this one to help me reflect on that period of my life with a happy nostalgic feeling.

I hate it when coming-of-age movies have such heavy topics, but this is an exception. It's true that puberty is a time of curiosity and FOMO, but this movie really teaches all of that and is packaged in a way that's enjoyable to watch. Anyway welcome to girl hood!
