Battle of the Sexes
Another year, another Emma Stone movie that makes me fall asleep. Jump cut to me waking up and forcing myself to rewatch it from the beginning and finish it. It’s a good movie. There’s not much more to say than that. It doesn’t particularly take any risks. If anything they played it safe. (They made Carrell’s character nice and sympathetic, which I don’t think...is accurate? Like, I’m pretty sure he was a sexist asshole.) I found myself wanting more than what I was given, because I think this could’ve been an interesting story. I will say that when the movie focuses on Billie’s Jean’s personal life, and her relationship with Marilyn and that personal conflict, I really enjoyed it. Their romance was beautiful. (Gay rights!) But outside of that I really did not care. The last tennis match was well executed. Oh! And Nicholas Britell (who composed my favorite score last year, Moonlight) did a fantastic job here.
