The Last House on the Left
Having seen the remake of this film ages ago, I knew what I was going to get into with The Last House on the Left. But, if I had seen this when it came out in 1972, I would’ve been shocked. Gore films existed before this, but it feels like this film was a pre-cursor to the gorier horror films of the 80’s, as well as one of the first slasher films. That being said, The Last House on the Left takes a long time to get where it needs to be, focusing a lot on the torture of the girls, rather than the revenge the parents deal out. It takes well over an hour before the film really gets interesting, and with a runtime under an hour and a half, still feels like a pretty long watch. For its time, this film was shocking and revolutionary, and deserves props for being willing to show acts as violent as these. Wes Craven is a horror icon, and this film shows him planting his roots to a steady, and prosperous, career.
The Last House on the Left
It’s always interesting seeing the early works of renowned directors. While I loved Wes Craven’s other films, I can’t say that I particularly enjoyed this one, nor is it really good. The tone is all over the place. One minute, it’s a road comedy revolving around a bunch of serial killers, the next minute, we see two teenage girls forced to strip and kiss each other or face death. Oh, and the upbeat folk music that played throughout the course of the movie got old really fast.
The Last House on the Left
The Last House on the Left is Wes Craven’s horrific low-budget directorial debut. At its time it was controversial, but today it's just utterly bland. The film isn't good, nor vastly shocking, and Craven’s flair is at a dead miss. The Last House on the Left is a dreadfully pointless horror with poor craftsmanship and nothing else.
