The Blackcoat's Daughter

The Blackcoat's Daughter is one of my more anticipated films from A24, a studio that I have grown to love. It's a horror film, a genre they notoriously have had some fantastic releases with. With this in mind, there were some really big shoes for this film to fill, sadly not living up to the other films that the studio has released. This film was beautifully shot. Many scenes throughout were extremely haunting, creating this cold atmosphere that really set the film apart from many other horror films. More reminiscent of the imagery used in The Witch, this film had the potential to have the amazing aesthetic that many of the great modern horror films have. While the film did have beautiful imagery, the biggest problem that the film had was writing and acting. The writing of the film really did need to have some work done. There were numerous scenes with clunky dialogue, making the film hard to take seriously. This lack of seriousness really shone through the acting, with Emma Roberts potentially giving her worst role in her filmography. She was wooden, which fit her character, but this lack of emotion just didn't suit the film. She seemed as uninterested in the film as I was while watching it. The other actors were decent at best, with no actor really shining, just having some decent acting for poorly written characters. A24 is my favorite film studio at the moment, with many of their releases being at the top of my most anticipated films of the year. There was hope that The Blackcoat's Daugther would be just as good as many of their other releases, but this film truly was a letdown. It was a beautiful looking film, but just didn't have the substance to become a good horror film. This film certainly is the studio's weakest film, but not all studios can release films like Moonlight and The Witch, there's always going to be duds.

The "twist" and ending were predictable, the acting was not great, and the plot felt messy. This film just did not draw me in. Might have to give it a rewatch someday.

Very well crafted. It’s bad vibes personified onto film. Very slow, but very atmospheric. A lot of what is being done here works extremely well. Some of it didn’t work as well for me. Some of the stabbing is… INTENSE to say the least. To the point that even I was uncomfortable. But if that’s what you want, this is absolutely the movie for you.
