Paranormal Activity
I remember when Paranormal Activity came out. I was 12 when it was released in 2009, and I was barely into watching movies, let alone watching a low-budget horror movie. Some of my friends had seen it, and they said that it was the scariest movie that they had ever seen. I doubted that it was the scariest movie ever made, but it still peaked my interest. Years later, I would get to see it myself, and after watching it several times, I can say that it is one of the most terrifying movies that I have ever seen. What makes Paranormal Activity work is the fact that it felt real. Found footage wasn't what it is today; there weren't many found footage films being released. Since this concept was really new, I think people found it to be extremely real. And that's how I feel while watching it. The movie itself feels like it's someone trying to document paranormal activities going on in their house. I think this works well because of the cast as well. Katie and Micah seemed to be like a couple who were really trying to deal with these paranormal accounts. When watching some films, you can tell that actors are acting, but this seemed much more genuine. When the characters would become scared, you would become scared because it seemed that their fear was genuine fear. Paranormal Activity is scary. This films works on many levels to make the scares seem real. The sound department really is the ones who makes the film scary. Without the sound, we would only have visuals of something happening, where the sound adds reality. Paranormal Activity may seem like something that's been done a million times before, but it was one of the first to do it. It was extremely ambitious, especially for the studio to release a completely unknown film with a small budged. This film proves that you don't need a big budget to create one of the most successful franchises of all time. I've seen the theatrical version of the film many times, but I had never seen the alternate ending, so I decided to watch it this time. If they had decided to stick with this ending, after Spielberg said to change it, I think they wouldn't have created so many sequels. The alternate ending of the film really leaves an ending, instead of you wondering what was going on. It was more shocking rather than frightening, with the latter being used for the theatrical release. I do prefer the theatrical ending to the alternate, just because the alternate seemed to be too much of a cop out. That ending didn't seem like it would fit with the rest of the movie, like it was something out of the blue. I think that it was a good idea for them to have a different ending, since it spawned a couple of good sequels. But, with any series, they go too far and end up creating unnecessary sequels. There may be more stories to tell with the Paranormal Activity franchise.
