Mike Flanagan blew me away with Oculus. It was so unique and well done, and when I heard about this film, I was ecstatic when I heard the premise of this. When Hush made it onto Netflix, I was really excited as well. Now that I've seen Hush, I wish there were more things done. That's the similar case with Before I Wake. I thought Before I Wake was supposed to be horror. The premise seemed like it had the potential to be terrifying. But that's not what happened. There were some scenes that were tense, but there was nothing honestly frightening about this film at all. Yes, the creature had a scare appearance, but that doesn't make this movie a horror movie. They could have went so many different ways with the plot, and this just felt like it was too "easy". There was the possibility for an absolutely horrifying film, but sadly we get an interesting plot that wasn't executed as well as it could have. Flanagan is a great director, but I wish that he would have made some other decisions about Before I Wake. I really am excited to see what else he puts out, but now I'll be more wary. Let's hope that he releases something like Oculus again.
