Ok, pretty neat seeing this again after all this time. Back then I never squared its humanitarian streak and critique despite residing firmly in popcorn spycraft and latter-day exoticism. It inherits Le Carre's decades of 'sunken costs/sunken lives' and says, very entertainingly, "fuck you and the horse you rode in on". Redford flexing every social-manipulation cue as all-purpose state-approved-then-sidelined administrative imp, it's rich stuff.

“Do you remember when we could tell the good guys from the bad guys?” Tedious. Like if you adapted one of those cheap James Patterson airport novels. 00s Tony Scott seems to have a penchant for getting actors in a room to discuss a situation happening outside in the real world. Sometimes this is successful (https://boxd.it/4fLp0V), sometimes, like here, it is not. A lot of this is due to the film feeling unbalanced and being very verbose without out a lot of interesting things happening. While the ending, and how it ties into the rest of the film was clever, for me it was not enough to redeem the overall film. All that being said, even in his twilight years, Robert Redford needs me you guys. He does.
