East of Eden
“I even tried to buy your love, but now I don't want it anymore. I can't use it anymore. I don't want any kind of love anymore. It doesn't pay off.” Immediately subtracted stars for the adaptation of a generational story…getting rid of the generational element. Who thought it was a good idea to skip to the last generation? I’ve yet to finish the novel for EAST OF EDEN but I figured since the adaptation will probably disappoint me, I’d watch it first free of bias. However, the film removing Charles entirely from the equation that is Adam Trask is too big a blunder for me to get past. Let alone Adam’s relationship with his own father. The film isn’t even particularly shot or paced well. However, I value Dean’s portrayal of Cal—a character who I haven’t met yet but rings true nonetheless. Dean sells being the unfavored second son and the torturous nature that + not knowing his mother imparts on him. No one else stood out to me though. Abra, perhaps. All in all, this just makes me eager to dig into the book to get the real story.

"Tonight, I even tried to buy your love, but now I don't want it anymore." What a fantastic film. Cal's attempts to get his father's approval are heartbreaking at times. And the ending is great, intense and tragic, but also hopeful and happy; obviously, more so for one brother than the other. James Dean gave an amazing performance here, and Julie Harris was very good. Also, I don't know why but the way Dean talks in this and his voice reminds me of Grace Kelly.
