House on Haunted Hill

Vincent Price stars in this fun and silly ‘horror’. To be honest it’s more like a murder mystery but it definitely hits the beats of Halloween. The story is interesting, characters are pretty great (apart from the old women who doesn’t really do anything), the only things that lets this down is the weak ending. It could’ve been a star higher had the ending been as good as the rest of the film.

House on Haunted Hill

I think what I appreciated more on this re-watch was the macabre funhouse spirit of it, its original implementation as a frightful attraction than just a matinee. Stories of a skeleton careening over audience heads, or the threat of a real-world jolt under your theater seat with its sibling feature of the same year, "The Tingler". For another of the Castle productions, "Macabre", the marketers issued a life insurance policy against "Death by fright" when viewing; a fact my dad still tenderly reminisces about when he was being scared witless as a kid at that time. It's all very quaint today, and perhaps the biggest draw in modern viewings will be the high-contrast scheming of a Vincent Price and Carol Ohmart as power couple gone terribly wrong. I'll also always like Elisha Cook Jr. in his "Worried Man" role.

House on Haunted Hill

Iconic scares, iconic sets, isonic camp, iconic actors, and you can probably guess it, a truly iconic horror film. Top tier horror delivered in such a fun way, showing there can be a balance between good horror and camp, all you need is a little dash of Vincent Price and you’re good.
