Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire", written and directed by Gil Kenan, is a feature length episode of "The Real Ghostbusters" at it's core. It's an honest to god average popcorn flick. So much so that l'm confused how it sparked so much debate online. This movie is just an average amount of fun. It's nothing too special, and it's nothing too blatantly terrible. I enjoyed seeing the cast together and seemingly having fun (apart from Bill Murray, who is clearly bored out of his mind here). The main cast and returning cast do have great chemistry, which helps alleviate, for me, the issues most viewers had with this movie. Don't get me wrong though, I do have my issues with this film. The pacing here is pretty bad. While l'm confused how most viewers found the plot to be convoluted or hard to follow (I had no problem keeping up), I do understand where they're coming from. The movie is balancing multiple plots revolving around the 11 or so characters? It tries hard to keep everything straight forward, but with THAT many characters front and center, it can get a little bit messy. There are also some weird editing choices here with shots that sometimes linger awkwardly for far too long. The movie does occasionally "play the hits" but thankfully not for too long. It's nothing egregious. Also, it is pretty weird going from "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" where we spent a lot of time building up the characters and drama, to this film where all of that kinda takes a back seat. It is sorta dabbled with, but it's not front and center this time around. I think this movie would have gotten more mileage out of being tighter and more focused on the characters rather than building up the "big bad". There's some great stuff hinted at between Phoebe and Melody, but it's never exactly built upon, which makes the inevitable eye-rollingly bad "plot twist" hold no steady ground. At least not enough for me to care Besides those problems, the actual Ghostbusters part of "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is actually pretty damn fun. There's a strong focus on world building here (even if it's to the detriment of the pacing of the movie). Fans, like myself, who enjoy fun lore additions will have a good time here. I really liked the SFX too at times and I think this movie is at least attempting to be great. There's actual effort being put on screen (there's a really fun shot that follows a character down the firepole from above, which stood out to me). Overall, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is a mixed bag for me but a serviceable popcorn flick that some reviewers and critics have been taking far too seriously. There are some fascinating concepts here but not so much in execution. With a better focus and maybe more time in the oven, I think this could have been a step in the right direction for the franchise. As it stands, it's just alright
