The Tragedy of Macbeth

Having never read the book, or any Shakespeare plays apart from Romeo and Juliet to my memory, I didn’t really know what to expect going into this. The first thing that strikes is the visuals. This is shot beautiful in a monochrome colour with a 4:3 aspect ratio which works really well. The sets, characters and costumes are also visually pleasing. I enjoyed the story, but in all truth I found the old English very difficult to understand. I tried as hard as I could but it felt like watching a foreign film without subtitles. Apart from this it was a great film which definitely warrants a watch. Watched at Showroom as part of London Film Festive. This film is set to release on Christmas Day in the UK. Watched with my beautiful ❤️

The Tragedy of Macbeth

Rewatched Blood Simple last night to prep for his latest here today, and what a slick and shadow-clad continuity it all has. Gravity itself has the characters in its spell, or do they throw themselves to it? Scrumptious! both from 1984 and the fleeing edge of 2021. This really is how I want most of my Shakespeare served up, in some bloody pool that'll glisten in the spotlight of fevered expressionist stagecraft. There's lived in spaces, and then there's performed in spaces, with harsh angles sliding across inhabitants throats and marking doomed speeches even as they're uttered. Will this get me to read more of the plays? ...... nahhhhhh. But I'll take whatever high-contrast cinematics they want to chuck at my face.
