The Cloverfield Paradox
Netflix is a game changer. Regardless if the provider has had a positive or a negative impact on the film industry, they have managed to change how films are presented. And yet again, Netflix has come out and added another aspect to films; surprise releases. While The Cloverfield Paradox was known to be coming out, the release date wasn't, so Netflix managing to pull a surprise release during the Superbowl truly is an achievement and definitely may be something the industry might be seeing in the future. It's a definite game changing move by the pioneers of unconventional film viewing. Since this film was a surprise release, there was little to no information about what the film actually was about. This is a good and a bad thing, since I managed to go into this film completely blind, not even seeing a trailer for the film before seeing it. I always like to go into a film knowing what other people think about it, just so I can see if I can see the same things other people see in the film. Going in completely blind actually worked in the film's favor, since there were several surprises that managed to shock me, which would have been revealed if I had watched a short trailer they had created. Science-Fiction hasn't been my forte, but the Cloverfield universe is looking to change my perception of the genre. Blending pure science-fiction with horror elements is something that's been done before, but a majority of the film manages to creep in on you, adding some shock in there, but has a slower, creeping horror to it. And while it is in the same universe as Cloverfield, it still feels like a seperate film, similar to what 10 Cloverfield Lane did. A surprise release of a film is something completely new to the industry, but it's something I can see happening in the future more frequently. Netflix surely made a big change yet again with the release of this film, but it's nice to see that it's not actually a terrible film. It's not the strongest film within this Cloverfield universe, but it's still a highly entertaining film that managed to surprise me even more than it's release did.
