Graduation Day

Graduation Day is a rollercoaster of a film, following a plot that twists and turns until it gets to a pretty satisfying conclusion. High school slashers have always been a favorite of mine, so I was shocked to find this one, which I hadn’t heard of before. But I’m so glad that I gave it a chance, since it really was a fun time! The effects aren’t the best, it’s very clearly a low-budget production, but it still has enough gore and guts to keep it interesting. I wasn’t entirely sure where the plot of the film was going to go, especially since things didn’t seem to connect for a while, but once these connections got made, this film went full-throttle into an even more wild time. Graduation Day isn’t the best slasher I’ve ever seen, but it’s still fun and campy enough to make it an enjoyable watch.

A Bay of Blood: A Ranking of Slashers (1974 - 1990) (http://boxd.it/IoH8) Yikes! If there ever was a slasher that could pass as an unintentional parody of itself, it would be Graduation Day. There's truly an illegal amount of slasher simplicity in this one, and it results in a lack of plot. Sure, there's some fine kills, but it is so dumb to have them happen one after the other between filler until it actually reaches to some sort of event that affects the plot's movement. But, that's also one of the reasons why I kinda admire the film. It does not give a crap. The opening throws you into a intense workout of disco music and teenagers running track and field, with insanely jarring editing that it honestly makes for one of slasher's most memorable opening scenes. From then on, that same absurdity comes in small doses—most notably at a roller-skating-concert-thing with a pretty insane band, not to mention the charming as hell Linnea Quigley. 2.6/5

Fun. Sleazy. Boobs and blood. The choppy cuts pace the film towards fun death counts until we get to the whodunit moment.
