The Chronicles of Riddick
Cult of Personality 2025 (https://letterboxd.com/allbeef/list/cult-of-personality-2025/) #41 of 52 | Costume Design by Ellen Mirojnick (https://letterboxd.com/costume-design/ellen-mirojnick/) It's cheesy and goofy-looking most of the time, but damn if it isn't still fun.
The Chronicles of Riddick
Overly complicating things aside, this is still generally a fun time.

The Chronicles of Riddick
“You keep what you kill.” CHRONICLESis…well, less, than its predecessor in nearly every way. While I do believe it was an ambitious pivot to go from sci-fi/horror to space opera, I’m not sure the concept works—particularly not with a character like Riddick. Sure, at times he has been known to be a reluctant hero, but everything here just seems to happen to make sure he gets from point A to point B without really imparting any agency onto the character. Even the side characters that populate the film feel off, and just exist to facilitate his video game like fetch quests. There’s no better example of this than his fellow Furyan, who had been converted by the Necros. His only purpose is to tell Riddick where to go, and then die. A missed opportunity to add depth to the world and/or give Riddick a brother-in-arms of sorts. You could cut him entirely and nothing would change. Other characters like poor Imam and Jack/Kyra are written poorly and done a great disservice. Jack in particular is nowhere near as compelling or interesting as she was in the previous one, and she was just a child there. Ostensibly she’s a young adult here and still wants to be the same as Riddick—OK. But then she’s not given her own arc and her suffering only serves to fuel Riddick’s pain. It really is a shame. Part of what made Pitch Black so good was that its concept was strong enough to stand on its own and allow big dick Riddick to navigate his way through it, both literally and morally. With this entry, there’s none of that because this genre doesn’t mesh well with what they set big dick Riddick out to be or do. Chronicles feels like something as clumsy as Lynch’s Dune, but with none of the style or writing to even think it’s slightly defensible. But hey, at least Karl Urban and Thandie Newton looked hot as hell doing their best Macbeth and Lady Macbeth impressions!
