Public Enemies

Public Enemies

Feels longer than Heat but still compelling to me. Christian Bale has his "Val Kilmer reloading in Heat" moment here. Not gonna lie, it felt like 3 hours after that big shootout in the woods (great shootout btw). Mann's digital cinematography is out of this world, but here it feels "documentary." Mann is the goat for showcasing the FBI as pathetic and sociopathic murderers!

Public Enemies

51/100 They caught him, he escaped, they caught him, he escaped again and at last, he willingly came into their trap and sacrificed himself to be remembered. Yeah this is quite easily the dullest movie Michael Mann has ever made. It only manages to get one thing right and that is the brutality and the unlawfulness of the FBI, it shows what a scum organisation it truly is. Johnny Depp did the best he could with a plain dead script and this is easily the worst character or should I say least inspiring character Christian Bale has ever played, only reason I can think of him even agreeing to do this film is because of Michael Mann, no way he would actually agree to a character like this which essentially represents how flat the movie is. The shooting sequences are decent, over the top but decent, the music is usually always good and the actors do what they can but this film really is doomed from the start. And what is up with the Johnny Depp face being awfully CGIed when he jumped over the counter at the beginning? Marion was nice and pretty like she usually is but her role was so typical. I guess when you make a film which is factual, at least I’d like to think most of it is, you really need to get the writing spot on, nothing else matters, you have to get the intricacies seeped into the dialogue, it should not be spoon fed to your audience, we’ve seen this formula a thousand times, you have to do something different even if you are the Michael Mann. You have to avoid obvious foreshadowing, you have to plant a path for the character from the beginning which the audience actually wants to explore and you really have to try your best to get both the leads to at least compliment each other in some manner. If anything, I really liked Stephen Lang, a tough guy who knows his shit, formulaic but always effective.
