my favorite thing about this movie was that it felt like a movie. also perplexed by the study that found this to be the scariest movie of all time. stunning soundtrack though

on a second watch this IS pretty gripping. ethan hawke hits it right out of the park and the writing is exceptional genre work. i will say as far as core concept / antagonist goes it doesn’t exactly make it to third base for me, BUT the work that this movie does with each surrounding piece is terrific. the main character still manages to be sort of compelling, even from within the confines of his genre trappings? like, ellison is a hard sell, but this movie fully makes his ethos understandable, his heel-turn breakthrough feel gratifying, and his punishment in spite of learning his lesson feel sort of unjust. this is pretty vital in order to make the movie work at all, given his selfishness drives the plot and he’s the character you spend the most time with, so by default the one the viewer attaches to the most. it’s also exceptional writing, in that i kind of can’t think of any other movie from this given niche who pulls off the dad character equally well. but anyway. the soundtrack is still impeccable. the cinematography is kind of breathtaking. if you’re up for something bleak i think this is a nice number for it
