Basket Case

On decaying VHS, a faded sigil reading "Tony's Video" hand-stamped over its label, skin tones saturated to ripe orange, and all shadows rendered impenetrable. As the sleaze lords intended.

Basket Case

I love this movie. There’s a real “kids getting together and putting on a show” vibe to much of this film. It’s awesome to see this New York. The effects are crude but fun. Rewatching because I finally got my hands on 2 & 3 and want to do the whole trilogy in one go.

Basket Case

My first Frank Henenlotter, and I’ve gotta say, this ended up being much better than I was initially expecting it to be. Basket Case is Henenlotter’s gratuitously bloody, yet wonderfully tongue-in-cheek debut feature film, made with a measly $35,000. Despite the film’s intentionally sleazy undertones, Basket Casedoes in fact touch on some heavier subjects, such as abortion, albeit very (very) lightly. The film has an interesting tone that rides the line between schlocky horror and offbeat comedy, which in no way is to the films detriment. Basket Caseis a ton of fun, looks great, and has some genuinely fantastic special effects, if not rather dated (though I’d say it adds to its charm). I’m not sure why it took me so long to watch this one, but what I do know is that I’m excited to explore the rest of Frank Henenlotter’s filmography.
