The Spiral

The first of two “first” sequels to Ringu, Spiral is a surprisingly atmospheric and tense film. We see the rules change, which sets up for what would be some interesting changes for the series, if they had actually followed through with what was set forth in this film. It’s a slow-burn, which actually works well, since it still maintains to be chilling without relying on any gore or jump scares. It’s another beautifully shot film, and one that I’m surprised people haven’t enjoyed as much. It’ll be interesting to see what Ringu 2 brings, and see the differences between the films.
