Julie & Julia

❝Anyway, so there we were in China, just friends having dinner, and it turned out to be Julia. It turned out to be Julia all along. Julia, you are the butter to my bread, and the breath to my life. I love you, darling girl.❞ ────── • ୨♡୧ • ────── One of my favourite films of all time, and one of the best comfort films too. I might be biased because I have a soft spot for films/series based on cooking, but Julie & Julia is very special to me. The best thing about this film is Meryl Streep and her portrayal of Julia Child, followed closely by her relationship with her husband Paul Child (played by Stanley Tucci). I am not someone who gets immersed in films easily, but I couldn't stop smiling whenever Julia and Paul were on screen. Julia was so bright and cheerful that it was infectious, and the adoration she and Paul had for each other was almost too much to watch. I hope to one day find a love like that. It was so beautiful to watch them support each other through the ups and downs of Julia trying to get her cookbook published and Paul's work relocated to other countries. Julie (Amy Adams) was adorable, and so relatable too. Although she becomes a bit egocentric as she progresses through Julia's cookbook, she redeems herself and we go back to cheering for her success. Initially I didn't like Eric (Chris Messina) very much, after rewatching the film I understood his frustrations and was happy when he and Julie were able to fix their issues. Of course the cinematography was gorgeous, with some lovely shots of Paris and Julia's cooking journey. The bright colour palette perfectly complemented Julia's exuberant personality and surroundings, while bringing cheer into Julie's as she progressed through the cookbook. The background score was also excellent and fit every scene it was used in. This film may not be everyone's cup of tea but I will always go back and experience the magic over and over again as if it was my first time watching.

Julie & Julia

Haven’t seen this since theaters, and I again realize that the Julie portion of this film is really not very good. Amy Adams does her best, but Julie is just annoying and unlikeable. Streep on the other hand is, unsurprisingly, fantastic. I would’ve much rather had a full film following her Julia Child. The loving chemistry between her and Tucci is beautiful.
